A boutique build think tank in Sydney

You imagine.
We build.

AI‑powered solutions, designed and built with Australian small businesses and not‑for‑profits — the thinking and the building by the same hands.

The studio

A think tank with a workbench.

Company31 is deliberately small. The thinking and the making happen at the same bench, by the same hands, so an idea can go from sketch to working software without being handed to anyone else. Your organisation already has the people who imagine: project managers, change managers, operations leads. What it lacks is someone who builds.

Every good idea needs an accomplice.

The bench

One bench, two sides.

Bring the picture in your head. We bring the making.

“Reporting eats our weekends.”

Board pack, drafted

A tool that drafts the board pack from your own numbers.

“Volunteers ask the same fifty questions.”

Answers, any time

An assistant trained on your playbook that answers them well.

“Our data lives in nine spreadsheets.”

One clean view

One view of the organisation the whole team trusts.

Everything Company31 builds is documented and handed over. You own it. Your team can run it without us.

The fork

Software is not the destination.

This is where the thinking earns its keep. Every technology project reaches the same fork, and the two roads cost the same.

Technology implementation
New tools, old ways of working.

The software arrives and the week stays the same. More licences, more logins, and the work itself untouched.

Dead end
Business transformation
The work itself changes.

The tool is only the vehicle. What matters is what your team stops doing, starts doing, and can suddenly do.

Keeps going

Same investment, different destination. That is why every build starts with one question: what will your organisation do differently once this exists?

Built in the open

The lab is open.

We build in public at c31labs: thirty‑two public repositories of small tools, honest commits, and working code you can read before you ever call us.

The method

See clearly. Choose well. Change once.

Think
See clearly.

Understand before deciding. This is the think tank half.

Build
Choose well.

Decide before building. This is where the two halves meet.

Innovate
Change once.

Change the work, not just the tools.

Plain answers

Questions owners and boards ask us

What does Company31 actually do?

Company31 is a boutique think tank that builds. We work out what is worth making with Australian small businesses and not‑for‑profits, then we make it: automation, assistants, data and reporting tools, built beside your team and handed over so you own and run them.

Who does Company31 work with?

Small businesses and not‑for‑profits across Australia, and the project managers, change managers and operations leads inside them. You bring deep knowledge of your organisation. Company31 brings twenty‑five years of building across banking, government, automotive and media.

Do we need technical staff to work with you?

No. Most organisations we work with have no developers at all. Company31 does the building, explains everything in plain language, and documents each tool so your team can run it without us.

How is Company31 different from a consultancy?

A consultancy sells you the thinking and leaves the building to someone else. Company31 is a think tank with a workbench: the thinking and the building are one job, done by the same person. There is no strategy deck and no handover to a separate delivery team. We work in the open at github.com/c31labs, so you can read our code before you ever write to us.

We have bought new software before and nothing changed. Why would this be different?

Installing technology is not the same as changing how you work, and Company31 treats the second as the goal. A build starts only once we can name what your team will stop doing, start doing, or do faster because of it. If we cannot name that, we will say so and save you the money.

How do we start?

Send us the brief using the contact form on this site: your name, your email, and what you imagine. We read every one ourselves and reply, usually within a day. The first conversation costs nothing, there is no pitch, and you leave with an honest view of whether your idea is buildable. If it is, Company31 starts with the smallest piece of work that proves it.

What does boutique actually mean here?

Small on purpose, and staying that way. Company31 takes on few pieces of work at a time so each one gets the same attention, and so the person who understood your problem is still the person at the keyboard three months later. It is the opposite of being handed down a chain of account managers.

Start

Bring us something to build.

Tell us what you imagine, in as few words as you like. A first conversation costs nothing and usually ends with a sketch. No pitch, no obligation.

A few sentences is plenty. What you picture, and what would change at your place if it existed.
